Local government roundup: Alpena receives award in financial reporting

City of Alpena

The Alpena Municipal Council met on Sept. 7 and took the following action.

∫ City Manager Rachel Smolinski informed the council that the City of Alpena was awarded the Government Finance Officers Association Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting for the 27th consecutive year.

∫ Voted 4-0 to award the valve replacement project to Team Elmer’s in the amount of $61,100.

∫ Voted to award the Water Recycling Plant Emergency Boiler Replacement Project work to Weinkauf Plumbing and Heating in the amount of $49,300.

∫ Voted 4-0 to award the bid to Arrowhead Upfitters for the upfitting of the police vehicles in the amount of $24,470.

Alpena Township

At its Aug. 10 meeting the Alpena Township Board of Trustees took the following action

∫ David Johnson of Fleis & Vandenbrink (F&V) gave a presentation on Fleis & Vandenbrink’ s engineering services. F&V as the #1 SAW Grant Consultant, has 250 employees, 11 offices with 90% of their work is for municipalities.

∫ Trustee Cash Kroll advised that the Personnel Committee had conducted interviews and were recommending Mark Hansen for the position of Fire Chief. Moved by Clerk Michele Palevich and supported by Trustee Cash Kroll to hire Mark Hansen as Fire Chief at an annual salary of $69,000 to be reviewed each budget year.

∫ Catherine Winn of F & V Operation presented the Township Board with an agreement from Dixon Engineering & Inspection Service to oversee and inspect the painting and repair project at the Piper Road water tower.

Presque Isle County

The Presque Isle County Board of Commissioners met on Aug. 27 in Rogers City and took the following action.

∫ Nena Sork, Director of Northeast Michigan Community Mental Health Authority presented an update on the organization and thanked the Board for their support and appointed members.

∫ Voted to adopt Ordinance 02-2021 as presented by the Presque Isle County Planning Commission.

∫ Frances Ommani presented the Board with the annual update of the Northeast Michigan Community Service Agency.

∫ 53rd Circuit Chief Judge, Aaron J. Gauthier, presented the Board with an update of the past year in the circuit court and was available to answer questions of the members.
