Szymanski earns all-state honors
BROOKLYN — The third time was the charm for Madi Szymanski.
The Alpena High School senior earned all-state honors at the Lower Peninsula cross country state finals on her third try, finishing 22nd (18:29.24) in the Division 1 girls race at Michigan International Speedway.
Her teammates sophomore Emma Dickens (20:21.01) and freshman Kaelyn Heath (20:34.93) finished 177th and 194th respectively. Alpena senior Hayden Allen finished 174th (17:12.95) in the Division 1 boys race.
In the Division 4 boys and girls races, Carter Upper (18:59.88) and Sara Decker (22:41.88) finished 143rd and 142nd respectively. Rogers City’s Matt Wilbert (18:27.13) finished 107th in the Division 4 boys race.
COLLEGE BASKETBALL
Lumberjacks drop 2
KALAMAZOO — The Alpena Community College men’s basketball team dropped its opening two games of the 2021-22 season over the weekend.
Alpena lost 100-62 to Kalamazoo Valley on Friday. Quay Humphries led ACC with 18 points and James Williams added 10 points.
Alpena lost to Lake Michigan College 84-68 on Saturday.
Humphries had 12 points and six rebounds; Chris DeRocher added 13 points and nine rebounds; and Cleveland Baker had 15 points.
ACC plays at Mid Michigan on Nov. 17.
