Ice and snow forecasted for Alpena

This map provided by the National Weather Service shows where Winter Storm Watches are issues in northern Michigan.

ALPENA – The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Watch advisory for most of Northeast Michigan, including cities and towns in Alpena, Montmorency, Alcona, and Presque Isle counties.

The storm watch begins at 7 p.m. tonight and is expected to end Tuesday night.

Heavy mixed precipitation is possible, with total snow accumulation of up to four inches and ice accumulation of around one half-inch possible. Wind gusts as high as 35 miles per hour are also expected.

Power outages and tree damage due to the ice and high winds is expected, and travel could be nearly impossible in many areas. The hazardous conditions could impact the morning or evening commute.

National Weather Service Meteorologist Matt Gillen said on Sunday it is probable the storm watch will be upgraded to a winter storm warning as the severe weather nears.
