ALPENA — Brad Srebnik and Joshua Wirgau are now housed in the same building after deputies on Wednesday moved Srebnik from the Presque Isle County Jail, where he has been held since his arrest in late September, to the Alpena County Jail.
Srebnik and Wirgau separately pleaded guilty on Tuesday to weapons charges in a case that began with allegations that the men and an Alpena woman, Abby Hill, displayed guns to force a tow truck driver to drive them a short distance in Alpena Township. A charge of unlawful imprisonment was dropped as part of a plea deal.
Separate from that hijacking case, police have linked both men to the suspicious deaths of Hill and Alpena teen Brynn Bills, though neither man has been charged related to those deaths.
Police initially separated the men for investigative reasons, according to 1st Lt. John Grimshaw, commander of the Michigan State Police-Alpena Post, which has jurisdiction over the Srebnik and Wirgau cases.
He would not specify whether the separation was to further the investigation of the hijacking or another alleged crime.
Police moved Srebnik back to Alpena after his plea to expedite in-person conversations with Alpena Michigan Department of Corrections representatives required before sentencing, Grimshaw said.
Srebnik and Wirgau will remain separated while at the Alpena jail, according to Alpena County Undersheriff Erik Smith.
