ALPENA — Amid an uptick in car crashes at a busy intersection near Alpena High School and Thunder Bay Junior High School, officials advise drivers to follow traffic laws to keep themselves and pedestrians safe.
On Thursday, Alpena police officers and Alpena Township Fire department personnel responded to a two-car crash at the intersection of 3rd Avenue and Bagley Street near Alpena High School.
Although an airbag was deployed in one of the vehicles, nobody was injured.
The busy intersection is a hotspot for crashes and local officials have pledged to take action to address the amount of congestion and wrecks in that vicinity.

City Engineer Steve Shultz said Thursday nothing at the intersection is malfunctioning and as long as traffic and pedestrians continue to follow light sequences and traffic laws, everyone should remain safe.
The crash caused school buses en route to the nearby schools to become backed up in four directions, but none were involved in the wreck. The crash did cause buses to be delayed on their routes however.
Alpena Public Schools students had a half day Thursday, which forced the buses to navigate lunchtime traffic.
One of the drivers involved in the wreck was a high school student in Alpena. He was leaving the school via 3rd Avenue and drove through the intersection on his way home when the light was green. He said suddenly, a car that was traveling on Bagley Street crashed into him after running a red light.
His car sustained heavy damage and the contact from the other vehicle caused him to spin and come to rest on the edge of the street.

Nobody was hurt in the wreck, but it caused traffic to become backed up in four directions, including many school buses.
The second car pulled out of the way of traffic about a half a block from the intersection. It had major damage to the front end and the force of the collision was strong enough to deploy the airbags designed to protect people in vehicles when hard contact is made.
The district sent out robocalls to parents of students to notify them of the wreck and that buses were delayed as a result.
“An accident at 3rd and Hobbes meant school buses couldn’t access TBJHS and had caused delays of about 30 minutes that will affect all APS school buses for both the secondary and the elementary runs,” the release said.
The intersection falls on a boundary between Alpena and Alpena Township. The city maintains the intersection’s traffic signals in an agreement with the Alpena County Road Commission.
The city’s electrical contractor has installed bright LED bulbs in the intersection’s two existing light posts – which previously offered only dim, yellow light – and plans to install a new, possibly two-headed light on the northeast corner of the intersection, Shultz said in January.
Shultz said Thursday that installation of another overhead light depends on staff and equipment availability. Grant applications to update the lights are also being investigated, Shultz said.
School crossing guards to help students navigate the intersection is being considered, but so far, students are crossing the busy street unattended.
Shultz said adding crossing guards first requires an exhaustive traffic study on the intersection, which can be expensive.
