LACHINE — Drivers were diverted through a gas station parking lot when an oil tote tank containing 250 gallons of oil slipped off of a truck bed and spilled at the intersection of M-65 and M-32 on Monday afternoon.

The tank, freed by a broken strap, fell off of the pickup truck when the driver attempted to turn left onto M-32, spilling 250 gallons of oil, according to police.

Police ushered passers-by through an adjacent parking lot while responders from the Alpena Combat Readiness Training Center and the Green Township Fire Department addressed the spill.

The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy will assess the spell to determine possible environmental damage, police said.
