ALPENA ― Runners and a company with a heart for helping others raised $35,000 this summer to support local people experiencing cancer.

Lafarge Presque Isle recently presented MyMichigan Health Foundation with the proceeds from its eighth-annual Lafarge Quarry Run, a 5K through and around the quarry that attracts runners from across the state and beyond.

This year’s race was held on Aug. 13.

In eight years, the company has raised $294,000 with the run, donating the money to support renovations and equipment for MyMichigan Medical Center Alpena’s Cancer Center, according to MyMichigan Health.

This year’s proceeds, intended to heighten the awareness of breast cancer and the importance of early detection, will benefit the Breast Health Fund, helping patients of the Cancer Center pay for testing, prescriptions, transportation, housing, and meals.

Funds raised by Lafarge Presque Isle have helped pay for state-of-the-art equipment including a linear accelerator and 3D mammography imaging machine, the same equipment used at medical centers that offer the best cancer care in the nation, according to MyMichigan Health.
