ALPENA — Noah Adkins, an 18-year-old man accused of attempting to kidnap a young girl, and Gerald Stedman, a 56-year-old man accused of setting fire to his ex-girlfriend’s house which resulted in the death of her dog, both are taking more time to come to a possible plea decision on Monday in Alpena 26th Circuit Court.

Alpena County Prosecutor Cynthia Muszynski said the defense in the Stedman case requested additional time to go over the Cobbs evaluation, a procedure that provides a defendant with the opportunity to see what his or her sentence would be if they plead guilty to certain charges.

“The defense attorney asked for more time to talk to his client about what was contained in that report,” Muszynski said, “so it just got pushed off.”

Muszynski also stated that the defense for Adkins made a similar request.

The defense for Adkins and Stedman could not be reached for further comment.

Adkins currently faces one count of kidnapping-child enticement, one count of assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder, and one count of assault or assault and battery.

The potential plea Adkins is having evaluated would see him plead guilty to the first two counts and have the last one dismissed.

Police arrested Adkins on May 10 after he allegedly tried to kidnap and beat an 8-year-old girl in Alpena Township.

The Michigan State Police said in a press release at the time that Adkins approached the girl in her back yard and attempted to incapacitate her by covering her mouth. The alleged victim managed to escape Adkins and the alleged victim’s 13-year-old brother, who saw the alleged attempted kidnapping, shot Adkins with a slingshot in his head and chest, police and the girl’s family said.

Adkins then fled the scene but was identified by the wounds on his head and chest and taken in by police later that day, police said.

While in custody, police said, Adkins confessed that he planned to severely beat the alleged victim.

Adkins was originally arraigned in Alpena’s 88th District Court in late May, but he was moved to Juvenile Court because he was 17 at that time. On Aug. 17, his case was waived over to 26th Circuit Court.

Stedman currently faces one count of second-degree arson, one count of second-degree home invasion, one count of preparation to burn a dwelling, and one count of killing/torturing an animal.

Stedman was arrested on April 13 after allegedly setting his ex-girlfriend’s house on fire.

The Alpena County Sheriff’s Office said in a press release at the time that Stedman was spotted exiting the window of the burning building on the 500 block of Michigan Avenue and fleeing the scene in a black Sedan.

With the help of the Michigan State Police Fugitive Team, Stedman was tracked to an address near Cincinnati and was arrested without incident.

Also in court on Monday:

∫ Domonick Medlin was sentenced to 76 months to 10 years in prison, with credit for 149 days served, for assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder and 93 days of incarceration, with credit for 93 days, served for domestic violence after being found guilty by a jury. Medlin faced an additional charge for possession of methamphetamine but was found not guilty by the jury.

∫ Kaden Johnson was arraigned on one count of perjury and one count of bringing contraband into prison.
