HILLMAN — The Hillman High School softball team fulfilled a dream on Tuesday as the Tigers traveled to Pickford and continued their postseason dominance, defeating Hancock 12-0 in six innings during a Division IV quarterfinal game as Hillman punched its ticket to East Lansing, advancing to the Final Four for just the third time in program history and first time in nearly a decade.

Nicole Barbeau led off the game with an infield single, stole second base, and came around to score on an RBI single off the bat of Gretchen Weiland as the Tigers wasted no time drawing first blood.

With two outs in the top of the first, Cassidy Benac delivered a clutch two-out, two RBI double that plated Elise Flaugher and Maddie Oswald to put Hillman on top 3-0.

Hillman ace Gretchen Weiland was dialed in and the Tigers’ defense was nearly flawless behind her as Hancock had no answers at the plate as Weiland twirled a no-hitter, striking out nine over six complete innings.

After scoring three in the first, Hillman added three more in the second on another clutch two-out bases-clearing double, this time off the bat of Hannah Crane as Gretchen Weiland, Oswald, and Aubrey Weiland all came around to score as the Tigers doubled their lead.

Hillman added a run in the third, a run in the fifth, and four more in the sixth as the Tigers won their fifth consecutive postseason game by double-digit runs.

Barbeau, Benac, and Autumn Kazyaka each recorded two hits. Benac, Crane, and Gretchen Weiland all drove in three runs and Barbeau had a pair of RBIs. Kazyaka scored three times. Oswald and Aubrey Weiland both scored a pair of runs and Saige Flaugher also had a hit and run scored in the win.

Hillman advances to Friday’s Division IV state semifinal game at Secchia Stadium on the campus of Michigan State University in East Lansing at 3 p.m. against Holton.
