ALPENA — Alpena Public Schools was recently alerted by school staff about the presence of three bed bugs on an item in a hallway at Ella White Elementary, according to a news release from the district on Tuesday.

APS followed guidance from the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services and followed protocols engaging a professional pest control agency while taking actions to mitigate any further exposure to students and staff in the classrooms and facility under the guidance of the district nurse.

Families of Ella White students were notified.

The district has no reports of any further school-based exposures in any other locations in the school facilities.

The professionals involved found no indications of an infestation at Ella White, the release said. This leaves students and staff at low risk for transmission.

APS is taking continued steps to further reduce any risk of exposure.
