PREP ROUNDUP: Alpena High cross country competes
Delta College was the destination for the Wildcat cross country teams on Saturday, where the Alpena High School boys and girls toed the line to compete in the Saginaw Heritage Invitational.
The boys team, missing some athletes and therefore not running at full strength, still managed a third-place team finish.
Freshman Xander Allen won the men’s race by eight seconds in a career-best 16:02. Fellow freshman teammate Logan Szumila followed in ninth place in 17:06. Senior Kenan Knight was 12th at 17:12 and freshman Brenden Werth placed 20th smashing the 18-minute barrier with a 17:30. Senior captain Thurston Imhoff was the fifth man in with a career-best 17:40.
The Wildcat girls raced to a fourth-place finish with senior Amelia Roznowski leading the pack. Her sixth-place finish was a career-best 20:12. Izzy Szymanski in 21:24, Elizabeth Barnhill in 21:48, Marian Renard in 22:15, Lila Scott in 23:35, Ava Karsten in 23:59, and Abby Ruczynski in 24:59 made up the top seven.
Next on the agenda is the Big North Conference Championship. This year’s rendition will be held on Oct. 15 at Veterans Serving Veterans Memorial Park near Cadillac.
