AAU gymnasts kick off season

The Alpena AAU Gymnastics Team started its 2024-25 season with its seventh annual Pure North Classic gymnastics invitational. Teams came from all over the state including the U.P. West End Gymnastics drove down from Nauganee, while High Flyers Gymnastics drove up from Howell, RAYG from Grand Rapids, and Flipstars from Ludington.

This meet also honored their three seniors; Callie Brousseau, Faith Dragiewicz, and Brooke Smith.

“These three ladies have spent ten years plus in the gym honing their skills,” head coach Geri Samp said. “It was great being able to honor such dedication, hard work, and lovely ladies.”

Two of Alpena’s teams took first place; Xcel Silver and Xcel Gold.

Representing the Silver team were Livvy Spangle, Rachel Grider, Madelyn Coffman, Emmi Ruby, Cailyn Peters, and Elliott Radford. Spangle placed second on vault (9.50) and floor (9.20), Grider placed first on beam (9.60) and all-around (37.40), Coffman placed first on floor (9.40) and second all-around (37.10), Ruby placed first on vault (9.60) and second on beam (9.0), Peters placed second on floor (9.30), and Radford placed second on floor (9.30)

Representing the Gold team were Lydia Allen, Aryanna Page, Abigail Reinhardt, Libby Misiak, Clare Lacross, Brooklynn Finch, and senior Callie Brousseau. Allen placed second on floor (9.30), Page placed first on vault (9.65) and second all-around (37.25), Reinhardt placed first on vault (9.50), Misiak placed first on vault (9.50) and bars (9.60), Lacross placed first on vault (9.50), Finch placed first on vault (9.50) and second on floor (9.35), and Brousseu placed first on beam (9.70), floor (9.70), and all-around (38.30). Brousseau also earned the honor of having the highest all-around score throughout the whole meet.

The two seniors who represented the Xcel Platinum team were Faith Dragiewicz and Brooke Smith. Dragiewicz placed first on the floor (9.60), second on the vault (9.40), and all-around (37.20). Smith placed first on the floor (9.60), and second on the vault (9.40).
