ALPENA — The Alpena 45ers rebounded from their 5-4 loss to the Waterford Sharks on Saturday to secure a 6-4 victory in the teams’ Sunday matchup.

The 45ers were the first to strike in the game, with Ben Henry finding the back of the net with 4:06 remaining in the first period.

His goal, assisted by Nathan Albrecht and Cody Bourdeau, put Alpena ahead 1-0.

Head coach Myles Grix highlighted the impact of tactical changes, saying, “We made a few small adjustments to the lineup, switching up some line combinations that worked out in our favor.”

Alpena extended their lead early in the second period when Sean Schirripa netted a slap shot, assisted by Henry, just four minutes in.

The Sharks responded three minutes later with a goal from Kieran Carlile, cutting the 45ers’ lead to 2-1.

However, Henry struck again with 2:46 left in the period, scoring his second goal to give Alpena a 3-1 advantage.

“(Henry) is an exceptional hockey player and was for us while over in Gaylord as well,” Grix said. “He’s a true leader in the room and really can open the ice for whoever he’s playing with.”

The third period proved intense as Waterford surged, attempting to close the gap. Despite their efforts, Henry added two more goals, completing an impressive four-goal performance, while Albrecht contributed a crucial goal of his own.

Reflecting on the team’s approach, Grix stated, “Our strategy is always the same: Protect our net and get the puck out of our zone, block shots, and get sticks in lanes, keeping them outside.”

The victory was particularly meaningful after Saturday’s close loss, according to Grix.

“Well, it was definitely a tough loss on Saturday; a lot of guys were upset,” Grix said. “But how we played Sunday showed we can compete with the best teams in this league. We played great five-on-five all weekend, so the guys have learned we gotta keep our composure and stay out of the box. But this is a huge momentum shift for us going forward.”

Grix emphasized the team’s readiness for future challenges, saying, “The guys in that room are ready to put the league on notice that the 45ers are here and ready to contend for a title.”

The 45ers play at home against the Detroit Warhawks this Saturday at 7 p.m. at Northern Lights Arena. The matchup continues on Sunday when the teams play at 1 p.m.
