Alpena Wildcats gear up for hockey season
ALPENA — As the Alpena High School varsity hockey team prepares for their first home game of the season, head coach Ben Henry shared his reflections and expectations for the upcoming season.
Henry highlighted the importance of the Wildcats’ intensive offseason training.
“A lot of team workouts,” he said, were a key part of their strategy, including bi-weekly “blue line skates” that spanned the entire summer.
Notably, the return of many experienced players led to a self-managed offseason regimen.
“We had quite a few returners this year,” Henry said, mentioning 15 boys are returning players.
The return of seasoned players brings added maturity, which he believes will be a significant advantage.
Their preparation was put to the test on Saturday when the Wildcats participated in four 40-minute scrimmages and won all four games.
Discussing the team’s current strengths, Henry pointed to their speed and strong puck movement.
“We’re fast, we move the puck up the ice pretty fast,” he said. Henry also mentioned goaltending is another area of promise.
Henry was also transparent about the challenges that lie ahead, saying competing against larger teams presents a potential hurdle, especially considering the size of their defensive lineup.
“Our defensemen are not overly big,” he said.
When asked about his expectations for the Wildcats this season, Henry said the goal is to, “Win as many games as possible and make it to that regional final game.”
Henry is chasing a milestone this season, aiming for his fourth consecutive regional title as head coach. Yet, there is one obstacle he is determined to overcome: advancing beyond the quarterfinals. The Wildcats have struggled to clear this stage in recent years, but Henry’s sights are set on reaching Plymouth for the state’s final four, where he hopes to showcase the team’s talent on the biggest stage.
Beyond gameplay, Henry emphasized the Wildcats’ commitment to growth and community involvement.
On the ice, the team’s collective mission aligns with Henry’s season expectations: winning regionals, surpassing the quarterfinals, and making it to the state semifinals in Plymouth.
Off the ice, the Wildcats are focused on character development and community engagement.
“Helping around the rink as much as possible” and participating in local initiatives are key aspects of their off-ice goals, Henry said.
The players are also setting academic standards, aiming for a cumulative team GPA of at least 3.0.
With their eyes set on a deep playoff run and a strong emphasis on community and academic performance, the Wildcats are ready for the season to begin.
The Wildcats face off against the Gaylord Blue Devils this Wednesday at 6 p.m. in their home opener at Northern Lights Arena.
