Man kills self during police chase in Alpena
ALPENA — A man killed himself while fleeing police this afternoon on Alpena’s north side, the Alpena Police Department said.
At 2:38 p.m. today, Alpena County Central Dispatch asked police to be on the lookout for a reckless driver, according to a news release from the Alpena Police Department.
Police located the vehicle near McRae Park and attempted to initiate a traffic stop. The driver left his vehicle and fled on foot, running into a residence, police said.
The man left the residence a short time later and again fled on foot, running a short distance before “ultimately taking his own life,” police said.
First responders provided lifesaving care at the scene, but the man died.
Police did not identify the man except to say he was 47 years old.
Police did not say how the man killed himself.
The Michigan State Police Alpena Post and Alpena Fire Department ambulance service assisted police.
The incident remains under investigation.
