Alpena boys wrestling compete at TC West tournament

TRAVERSE CITY– On Saturday, the Alpena boys wrestling team competed individually against 15 teams at the Traverse City West Holiday Classic Boys Individual Tournament. The points the wrestlers collected accumulated the Alpena boys to 12th place.

The team scored a total of nine points, with player Matthew Spencer making it to the semifinals.

Jonathan Parris competed in weight class 120. In Championship round one, he got pinned by Traverse City West’s B team. He also got pinned against Traverse City Central in Consultation round two.

Cayden Smith competed in weight class 138. In Championship round one, he went against Charlevoix and got pinned. In Consultation round two, Midland won by a technical against him.

Matthew Spencer competed in weight class 144. In Championship round one, he won by pin against Traverse City West. Then he won by pin again against Cadillac in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, he lost by pin against Midland. Then in the Consultation semifinals, he went into overtime and lost by a point against Traverse City West’s B Team.

Cruz Guthrie competed in weight class 150. In Championship round one against Holland, he lost by pin. Then he was no longer competing due to an injury.

Brody Oliver competed in weight class 157. He won by pin in Championship round one against Kingsley. He lost by pin in the quarterfinals against Traverse City Central. In Consultation round three, he lost by pin against Cadillac.

Owen Zitlau competed in weight class 165. In the quarterfinals, he lost by pin against Traverse City Central. Mio-AuSable pinned him in Consultation round three.

Lyrik Ricketts competed in weight class 175. Charlevoix pinned him in Championship round one. He also lost by pin against Holland in Consultation round two.

John Dargis competed in weight class 215. In Championship round one against South Haven, he lost by pin. In Consultation round two, he got pinned against Charlevoix.

Trenton Stephenson wrestled in weight class 285. In Championship round one, he won by pin against Charlton Heston Academy. He then lost by pin in the quarterfinals against Traverse City West. In Consultation round two he won by pin against Mio-AuSable. Then finally, in Consultation round three he lost by pin against South Haven.

The next dual for Alpena Boys Wrestling is Wednesday, Jan. 8 at Alpena High School at 5:30 pm.
