Alpena boys wrestling competes in first individual tournament of season
GRAYLING — Alpena’s boy wrestlers traveled Saturday morning to compete in their first individual tournament this season, the Dons Ferguson Boys Wrestling Tournament in Grayling.
With a total of 85.5 team points, the team placed 10th overall out of 24 teams. Wrestlers Lyrik Ricketts, Colt Walter, and Jude Krey placed sixth, and Matthew Kowalski placed third, gaining medals for the team.
Overall, Alpena’s statistics from the tournament showed that Alpena placed sixth overall for the most amount of pins in the least amount of time, eighth for total match points, and seventh for the most pins and tech falls in the least amount of time.
Owen Zitlau, weight class 165, scored the team seven points. In Championship Round One, Zitlau defeated Gladwin by pin and defeated Houghton Lake by pin in Consolation Round Three.
Westin Mitchell, in Consolation Round Three, defeated his opponent Gladwin of weight class 165.
Lyrik Ricketts, weight class 175, scored the team 11 points and placed sixth overall for his class. Ricketts, in Championship Round Two, won by a major against Traverse City West. In Consolation Round Three, he won by a pin against Roscommon.
Dominic Ford, weight class 285, won by a pin against Gladwin in Championship Round Two.
Colt Walter, weight class 285, scored the team 11 points and placed sixth overall for his class. In the quarterfinal, Walter won by a pin against Grayling.
Jude Krey, weight class 113, scored the team 11 points and placed sixth overall for his class. Krey won by a pin against Gladwin in the quarterfinals.
Jonathon Parris, weight class 120, scored the team five points. In Consolation Round Four, Parris defeated Gladwin by pin.
Matthew Kowalski, weight class 132, scored the team 24 points and placed third for his class. In Championship Round Two Kowalski defeated Oscoda by pin. In the quarterfinals, Kowalski won by a pin against Montrose, and won by a pin in the Consolation Round Four against Lake City. Finally, he defeated Mio-Au Sable by a pin in the third-place match.
Eli Werth, weight class 132, defeated Traverse City West by a pin in Championship Round Two.
Cayden Smith, weight class 138, scored the team four points. In Consolation Round One, Smith won by injury default against Gladwin.
Matthew Spencer, weight class 144, scored the team 6.5 points. In Consolation Round Three, Spencer won by a tech against Traverse City West. In Consolation Round Four, he defeated Kingsley by a pin.
Alex Dikeman, weight class 150, scored the team seven points. Dikeman won by a pin against Keegan Bray, a fellow Alpena wrestler in the same weight class, in Consolation Round Three. In Consolation Round Four, he won by a pin against Lake City.
Anthony Schultz, weight class 157, received a bye and lost to Traverse City West in both Championship Round One and Consolation Round Two.
The next event is an individual tournament on Saturday at Boyne High School at 9 a.m.
