Four Alpena girls wrestlers place at Holiday Classic tourney in Traverse City
TRAVERSE CITY– Alpena High School girl wrestlers competed against 16 teams individually at the Traverse City West Holiday Classic Individual Tournament on Friday.
Alpena overall placed ninth with the points each girl scored.
The Wildcats totaled 12 points, with wrestlers Carolyn Parker, Haley Stenz, Marleigh Hann, and Maddie Taylor all earning medals for the team. Hann placed fourth and Taylor placed third, while both Parker and Stenz placed second.
In the first round of the tournament, the girls came out with two wins and three losses.
Tryst Bukowiecki, of the weight class 125, got pinned by Traverse City West in her match. Against Mio-AuSable, Parker, of weight class 105, won by pin. Stenz, of weight class 110, pinned her opponent from Grayling. Hann, of weight class 115, was pinned by Mio-AuSable. Finally, Taylor got pinned by Grayling in weight class 130.
In the second round, the girls only got one with four losses.
Parker lost by pin against Glen Lake. Bukowiecki, who also lost by pin, went against Cadillac in her final match. Stenz got a win by pin against Mio-AuSable. Hann got pinned by Traverse City West, while Taylor got pinned by Mio-AuSable.
In the third round, which was the final round for three wrestlers, the girls collected two wins and two losses.
Parker won by pin against South Haven. Meanwhile, Stenz lost by pin against South Haven. Hann lost by pin against Charlevoix. Taylor got a pin against Manton, getting her first win of this tournament.
One wrestler kept fighting in rounds four and five. Parker won her fourth match by pin against Mio-AuSable. Then she came out and won her fifth and final match against Traverse City West by a pin.
Alpena earned four medals at the holiday tournament.
Statistics also show Alpena got fourth for the most pins in the least amount of time.
The next tournament for Alpena girls wrestling is Jan. 3 at 4:30 p.m. at Gladwin High School.
