PREP ROUNDUP: Alcona snaps Hillman’s conference win streak

The Alcona High School boys basketball team defeated Hillman on Thursday, 54-44.

“I absolutely loved the team’s effort tonight,” Alcona coach Alex Cole said. “Everyone bought into the game plan and played very unselfish.”

Top scorers for Alcona were Gavin Dellar with 19 and Evan Borsvold with 16.

“While we were a little sloppy at times early, our guards really stepped up in the 4th quarter and took control of the game,” Cole said.

Thursday’s loss snapped Hillman’s 52 game winning streak within the conference, dating back to 2022.

“Hillman played tough despite getting down 11-0 within the first two minutes of the game and battled back to tie the game 21-21 at the half,” Hillman coach Eric Muszynski said. “From that point on the game was back and forth until midway through the third quarter and into the fourth when the game would slip away.”

Leading Hillman in scoring was senior Brenden Rouleau who had 19 points and six steals. Junior wing Aedan Tucker would add 11 points and four boards, while senior guard Cuyler Schultz would continue to fill the stat lines with six points, six rebounds, three steals, and three assists.

“I always tell my teams when you play on the road the mindset is that you are down 10 and that you need that intensity as if you are,” Muszynski said. “The 11 point deficit hurt but I was impressed that we battled back to tie the game at the half but we simply ran out of gas and have to work on not allowing that to happen again.”

Score by quarter were Alcona 15 Hillman 8 in the first, Alcona 6 Hillman 13 in the second, Alcona 17 Hillman 12 in the third, and Alcona 16 Hillman 11 in the fourth.
