PREP ROUNDUP: Alpena swim tops Caro

On Thursday, the Alpena boys varsity swim team traveled to Caro and took a big win, 89-72.

“The team was two swimmers down which motivated everyone else to step up and give everything they had,” coach Jennifer Johnson said.

Beginning with individual events, senior Drew McConnell placed second in the 200 SC Meter IM and 100 SC Meter Breaststroke. Senior Landen Gagnon received third place in the 50 SC Meter Freestyle and 100 SC Meter Freestyle. Senior Emmet DeRosia earned second place in the 100 SC Meter Backstroke. Junior Alex Winfield placed first in the 50 SC Meter Freestyle and 100 SC Meter Butterfly. Junior Nicholas Dargis received second in the 100 SC Meter Freestyle and third in the 100 SC Meter Breaststroke. Sophomore Logan Mill earned second in the 100 SC Meter Butterfly and third in the 200 SC Meter IM. Freshman Joshua Short placed first in both the 200 SC Meter Freestyle and the 500 SC Meter Freestyle.

The team also finished first in the 200 SC Meter Freestyle Relay.

“This team is something special, they keep pushing each other,” Johnson said. “I’m incredibly proud of the effort from each and every member.”

The Wildcats return to action Jan. 7 against Alma.

ALCONA GIRLS LOSE TO CHARLEVOIX

The Alcona girls basketball team lost to Charlevoix on Wednesday, 41-38.

Leading Alcona was Elliyana Grimshaw with 23 points on the night. Gracyn Tracy added seven, Claire Somers and Lauren Travis added three, and Hannah Rendenski added two.

Alcona plays at Hale tonight.

ALCONA BOYS DEFEAT HALE

The Alcona boys basketball team defeated Hale on Thursday, 55-36.

Leading the Tigers was Evan Borsvold with 23 points. Ricky Schott was another top scorer with 13 points.

“Good team win tonight where everyone contributed after some early foul trouble,” coach Alex Cole said. “Evan Borsvold had another big night. Ricky Schott played very composed, running the show from the point guard spot. Overall, proud of the team for picking up a big win before break.”
