Wildcats secure 4-2 victory over Caledonia
ALPENA — The Alpena High School Wildcats varsity hockey team bounced back from a tough 7-6 shootout loss to Mattawan on Friday with a solid 4-2 win against Caledonia on Saturday night.
Saturday’s game began with Caledonia controlling the first period.
Tony Kauffman scored with just over five minutes remaining, followed by a goal from Ty Lewandowski four minutes later.
Trailing 2-0 at the break, Alpena regrouped and adjusted the team’s strategy heading into the second period.
Alpena began to close the gap early in the second period. Two minutes in, Lucas Weir scored with an assist from Garrett Hamp. Eight minutes later, Ethan Walker scored the equalizer, assisted by Gavin Winterstein.
In the third period, Alpena took the lead with just over three minutes left when Gavin Winterstein scored on a play assisted by Walker and Preston Schuldt.
Caledonia pulled their goalie in the final minutes, but Winterstein secured the win with an empty-net goal, assisted by Hamp, with one minute remaining.
After allowing two goals in the first period, Alpena’s defense held Caledonia scoreless for the remainder of the game.
Weir’s early second-period goal helped shift the momentum, and the team maintained focus to close out the game.
Alpena will play its next game at home against Cadillac at 7 p.m. Friday.
