Alpena wrestling secures 47-31 victory over Sault Ste. Marie, prepares for home meet Saturday
ALPENA — The Alpena High School Wildcats wrestling team delivered a strong performance Wednesday evening, earning a 47-31 victory over Sault Ste. Marie.
The Wildcats showcased their depth with key pins and technical falls, setting the stage for another big test at home this Saturday.
The night started off with a win from Haley Stenz (113), who quickly pinned her opponent in just 33 seconds, giving Alpena an early lead.
Matthew Kowalski (132) followed with another pin at 1:46, adding to the Wildcats’ momentum.
Cayden Smith (138) displayed impressive endurance in a back-and-forth match before securing a pin at 5:56 to keep Alpena rolling.
At 150 pounds, Matthew Spencer dominated his match, using a combination of takedowns and near falls to win by technical fall at 5:36, earning the Wildcats a crucial five points.
Brody Oliver (165) continued the team’s strong showing with a pin at 4:23.
Alpena also capitalized on forfeits, with Cooper Knapp (126) and Cruz Guthrie (157) adding automatic victories to the Wildcats’ score.
While Sault Ste. Marie managed to earn some key wins — including a quick pin against Keegan Bray (144) and another against Dawson Smolinski (215) — Alpena’s early dominance proved too much for the Blue Devils to overcome.
With the win, Alpena improves their season record and will look to carry their momentum into Saturday’s home meet, set for 10 a.m. in Alpena. The Wildcats will host a BNC invite, aiming for another strong performance in front of their home crowd.
