Landlord pleads guilty to COVID fraud

A Cheboygan County landlord, Mitchell James, has pleaded guilty to defrauding the state’s COVID Emergency Rental Assistance program, the Michigan State Housing Development Authority said in a news release.

MSHDA and the Presque Isle County Sheriff’s Office spent nearly three years investigating James, the news release said, finding he conspired with others to submit “multiple fraudulent CERA applications.”

James was sentenced in Cheboygan County to jail time and community service and was ordered to repay $158,000.
