One killed in 3-vehicle crash Wednesday in Mitchell Township

MITCHELL TOWNSHIP — A three-vehicle crash on Wednesday killed one motorist and injured three others, according to a Thursday press release from the Alcona County Sheriff’s Office.

The crash occurred at approximately 4:10 p.m. on M-65, one mile north of McCollum Lake Road in Mitchell Township.

Police’s investigation revealed that one vehicle — a Toyota Scion driven by a 36-year-old woman from Curran — traveling southbound on M-65 crossed the centerline and struck a second vehicle — a Ford Expedition driven by a 77-year-old man from Dexter — that was traveling northbound on M-65. The Toyota then struck a third vehicle — a Mazda sedan driven by a 37-year-old woman from Atlanta — that was southbound on M-65.

The Toyota driver was extracted from her vehicle using the Jaws of Life and was pronounced dead on the scene.

The driver of the Ford and his wife, a 78-year-old passenger, were transported to MyMichigan Medical Center Alpena by Alcona Emergency Medical Services with non-life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the Mazda was treated for injuries at the scene.

Speed and alcohol do not appear to be a factor in the crash, police said.

The highway was shut down by emergency personnel on the scene and remained closed until approximately 9 p.m.

The Alcona County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Curran, Barton City, and Curtis fire departments, the Michigan State Police-Alpena Post accident investigators, Michigan Department of Transportation, Alcona Road Commission, Alcona EMS, and the Alcona County Sheriff’s Office Victim’s Services Unit.

As of Thursday afternoon, the crash remains under investigation.
