PREP ROUNDUP: Alcona basketball teams take wins

Alcona High School’s boys basketball team defeated Charlton Heston on Thursday and Hillman on Friday.

“Great team win tonight to start off NSL Big Dipper play,” Alcona coach Alex Cole said of Thursday’s game.

Alcona defeated Charlton Heston 53-43.

Leading Alcona on Thursday was three senior captains Ricky Schott with 15 points, Garrett Somers with 12, and Evan Borsvold with 17.

Defensively, seniors Ethan CruzDeVaughn and Jordan Benac held strong.

Friday’s game against Hillman allowed the team to secure a 3-0 record for the week, as Alcona topped Hillman 67-54.

“Proud of the guys for staying locked in and handling the pressure down the stretch,” Cole said. “Lots of composure from our senior guards Garrett Somers, Ricky Schott, and Vinny Mahalak. Our bigs Evan Borsvold and Gavin Dellar handled a good portion of the scoring tonight highlighted by a huge game from our Sophomore Edju Hechlik!”

The leading scorer for Hillman was senior guard Brenden Rouleau with 20 points. Evan Crane had a nice night scoring 13 points and added seven boards. Aedan Tucker rounded out the double-figure scoring for Hillman with 10 points.

Hillman dropped to 6-4 on the season and will return to action Monday against Fairview.

“We had a good week winning two out of three games including a barn burner Wednesday vs. Rogers City,” Hillman coach Eric Muszynski said. “Rogers City and Alcona are two of the top three teams in the Big Dipper so although we would have liked to win all three games this week, splitting with those two shows how much we have improved. The third quarter was the difference and although we battled back we just couldn’t get over the hump in the 4th.”
