Shooting in Presque Isle County under investigation
ROGERS CITY — A Presque Isle County woman and a Presque Isle County Sheriff’s Office deputy escaped serious injuries last week after a man shot at them.
According to Sheriff Joe Brewbaker, the deputy was conducting a welfare check on the woman. When the police arrived, she ran out of the residence on Ocqueoc Road followed by a man chasing her out of the house with a gun. He began to fire at the woman and the deputy.
Brewbaker said the deputy returned fire and the man retreated back into the house where he was later found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot by a special Michigan State Police forces unit.
After the gunfire ended, Brewbaker said the woman told the deputy that she believed there were other guns and possibly explosives in the house, which forced Brewbaker to call in the special MSP units. He said at this point, the state police have not shared with him if there were weapons or explosive materials in the house.
Brewbaker said police agencies from Rogers City, neighboring counties, and the Michigan Department of Natural Resources offered support or assisted at the scene, as did local fire departments and ambulance services. He said MSP is leading the investigation into the officer-involved shooting.
The deputy has been placed on paid administrative leave as the state police investigate the incident.
The names of the man and the woman have not been released by police.
