Wildcats win swim meet

The Alpena High School boys varsity swim team won its meet Thursday against Oscoda High, 100-83.

The team has continued to stay strong, with determination and focus on having wins and continuing with personal records, coach Jennifer Johnson said.

On Thursday, in the 200-yard medley relay, Emmet DeRosia, Nicholas Dargis, Logan Mill, and Landen Gagnon earned personal bests.

In the 40-yard freestyle relay, Joel Kaiser, Linkon Meinzinger, Milo Dahleen, and Brenden Werth earned personal records.

In individual events, Milo Dahleen swam his best-ever 200-yard freestyle, and personal bests were earned by Landen Gagnon in the 50-yard freestyle, Linkon Meinzinger and Logan Mill in the 100-yard butterfly, Quentin Hubert in the 100-stars freestyle, Joel Kaiser and Brenden Werth in the 500-yard freestyle, and Nicholas Dargis in the 100-yard breaststroke.

On Tuesday, the Wildcats will host the meet against Caro in honor of their seniors DeRosia, Gagnon, and Werth at 5 pm.

HILLMAN BEATS POSEN

The Hillman High Schools varsity boys basketball team improved to 10-5 overall and 6-1 in the Little Dipper Conference with a home win over Posen, 61-52.

Despite battling illness, Hillman led from start to finish, with the exception of mid-third quarter, when the team got down by one but battled back to take the lead heading into the final period.

Hillman was led by junior big man Evan Crane, who scored 26 points and also led the team with 11 rebounds. Sophomore forward Ty Muszynski added 18 points and 10 rebounds, while senior guard Brenden Rouleau continued his double-figure scoring with 10 points.

“I’m very proud of the boys tonight,” Hillman coach Eric Muszynski said. “We have a lot of guys that are sick and they made no excuses, just played and finished the job. Naturally, with that being said, we showed what we can do in spurts, and I really like that we are trending in the right direction.”

Hillman returns to action Friday at 6:30 vs. AuGres.

Leading scorers for Posen consisted of Colton Paull with 15, Alex Soik with 12, and John Ennest with 11.

OSCODA TOPS ROGERS CITY

It was a battle for second place in the North Star — Big Dipper standing as the Oscoda High School boys basketball team hosted the Rogers City Hurons at Oscoda High.

In the end, Oscoda topped Rogers City, 33-28.

The Owls were led by Gage Woodward with 12 points, Jack Leclair with eight, Blake Mallak with seven, Jaeden Ullman with three, Crue Weisentstein with two, and Dustin Filipiak finished with one.
