ALPENA — The Alpena Sports Hall of Fame Board of Directors announced its Class of 2024. The five members of the 2024 class will be inducted during the Hall of Fame’s annual banquet on June 7.

The five members of the Class of 2024 are:

∫ Sue (Piper) Geyer — Alpena High School Class of 1981

∫ John Keller — Alpena High School Class of 1978

∫ Kevin Konczak — Alpena High School Class of 1987

∫ Eric Krebs — Alpena High School Class of 1970

∫ Marsha (Beaubien) Parker — Alpena High School Class of 2005

The Hall of Fame will also honor Matt Amlotte and Meghan Cameron as its Boosters of the Year and will present Al Randall with the Voice of the North award.

The soon-to-be hall-of-famers were chosen after tallying the votes of the members of the Hall of Fame Voting Association. Ballots with 14 nominees were mailed to 650-plus members to make the selections. The members’ ballots were counted to determine the selections.

SUE (PIPER) GEYER

For many years, Sue has established herself as one of the most consistent and winningest women’s golfers in Alpena and will join her mother Pat Piper – a Class of 1995 honoree – in the Hall of Fame.

Her resume includes numerous tournament wins including eight Alpena City Opens with wins coming in 2002, 2003, 2006, 2009, 2012, 2013, 2015, and 2021. She is also a nine-time winner of Alpena Golf Club’s Women’s Club Championship, earning the honor in 2003, 2004, 2008, 2012, 2013, 2017, 2019, 2020, and 2021.

JOHN KELLER

John made his biggest mark in track and field and still holds two varsity track records that have stood for over 40 years. During his senior season, Keller qualified for the MHSAA Class A state finals in the 120-yard hurdles and finished ninth overall. Keller’s finish of 14.9 seconds is still the accepted record in the high hurdles.

John was also a key contributor on sprint relay teams in the late 1970s. He helped set another 1978 school record that still stands, this time running the lead leg of an incredible 1:31.5 performance in the 800 relay alongside teammates Phil Nensewitz, Bob Woron, and Tom Dennomme. John was also a member of the 400 relay team, which ranks fourth at AHS.

KEVIN KONCZAK

Kevin was a two-time Alpena High cross country captain in 1986 and 1987 and has since gone on to a long and decorated career as a distance runner. He is a 20-plus time USA Triathlon All-American, and a five-time member of Team USA (three times for triathlon and twice for duathlon).

Kevin has also spent time as the USA’s top competitor in duathlon in his age group (45-49) and has won multiple national titles in both triathlon and duathlon. He is a two-time member of the US Cross Country Championships Running-Gold Medal Champion team (2014-15) and has won multiple regional championships racing in his home state of Colorado.

ERIC KREBS

Eric was a multi-sport star for the Wildcats who earned letters in football and baseball including four years as a starter for Alpena’s baseball team. He began playing baseball at age 8 and found success as a youth on Alpena’s Junior Babe Ruth All-Star teams from 1966-1968 and won a state championship in 1967. He was the starting catcher on Alpena’s 1969-1971 Senior Babe Ruth All-Star teams.

Though he earned Class A all-state honors in football as a senior and had some college interest, Krebs chose to play baseball at Olivet College. He became the team’s starting catcher in his freshman year and never missed a game in four years. He earned all Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association first-team honors once and second-team honors twice.

Eric was also a familiar face on local fields during and after college as he played Alpena County League baseball for several teams. In 1976, he opened the Alpena Racquet Club and went on to work for Besser Co. He later became a Michigan High School Athletic Association-certified umpire and called high schools all over Northeast Michigan.

MARSHA (BEAUBIEN) PARKER

In her youth, Marsha was a two-time NFL Gatorade Punt Pass Kick state finalist and went on to become a do-it-all athlete at Alpena High, earning nine varsity letters — four in softball, three in volleyball, and two in basketball. On the hardwood, she was a 2005 Big North Conference honorable mention. That same year, she was a first-team all-BNC selection in softball and earned first-team all-state honors.

Marsha went on to Saginaw Valley State University, where she competed in softball, basketball, and track and field. On the softball field, she was a two-time Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference selection, and earned a slew of honors including 2009 GLIAC Player of the Year, Midwest Region Player of the Year, Midwest Region first-team honors, and National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-American honors. Additionally, she set the Cardinals’ single-season stolen base record (40).

AL RANDALL

Al, the longtime radio voice of the University of Michigan hockey team, will be the second recipient of the Voice of the North award, which honors media members for their contributions to local athletics. Randall formerly worked in radio in Rogers City and Alpena, serving as the voice of the Alpena High hockey team during dozens of memorable games at the former Mich-e-ke-wis outdoor rink and during the Wildcats’ runs to three Class A state championships.

MATT AMLOTTE

For many years, Matt has been a do-it-all contributor to local youth sports, particularly with youth baseball in Alpena, serving on different boards and contributing to renovation projects. Most recently, Matt has been involved with the Light the Park campaign with Alpena Huron Shore Little League, which aims to install lights on each of the fields at the organization’s complex on U.S.-23 North.

MEGHAN CAMERON

Meghan has worked as a volunteer coach with the Alpena High figure skating team for several years and has also been a coach with the Alpena Figure Skating Club for nearly 10 years across multiple levels, including as a member of the club’s board. In addition to coaching, her many duties include cutting music, choreographing routines ahead of time, and writing the showbook.

In the coming months, the Hall of Fame board will announce its selection for Team of the Year, whose members will also be honored at the banquet.
