ALPENA — For the first time since 2007, the Alpena High School hockey team has advanced to the semifinals, reigniting excitement and pride in the community. With three championship titles in the program’s history — the last in 1993 — the Wildcats are determined to make this year’s playoff run a memorable one.

Assistant captain and AHS senior Michael Kreis reflected on what this moment means for him and his teammates.

“It feels amazing to have made it this far in the playoffs, as I never have before,” he said. “It also makes myself and my entire team more hungry to keep on going. It’s an honor to have another week playing for our amazing city, school, and hockey team.”

Kreis expressed a whirlwind of emotions heading into the semifinals.

“My emotions are very mixed,” Kreis said. “First is angry because I don’t like how everyone in the state disrespects our team. Next is happy because we get to go down and try to prove everyone wrong and win a state championship. Lastly is sad because I know my time with this team will be over after this weekend. But I know after my four years as a Wildcat hockey player, I have created brothers for life with around 60 guys and lifelong friendships with my amazing coaches.”

When asked about the team’s mindset going into the semifinals, Kreis made it clear that the Wildcats are focused on one goal: “I’m hoping for our team to just empty the tank and give the last bit of gas we have, but honestly, we are coming down for one reason, and that is to win a state championship — for a little bit of happiness and honor for our town. Alpena needs it.”

Standing in the way of Alpena’s championship hopes is Orchard Lake Saint Mary’s, a team with a strong playoff pedigree.

Head coach Brian Klanow emphasized their experience, noting that the last time his team made it this far was three years ago.

“We have three championship titles, and the last time we won a championship title was in 2008,” he said.

When describing his team’s playing style, Klanow highlighted their speed and efficiency.

“I would say our brand of hockey is quick passing,” Klanow said.

With both teams hungry for victory, the upcoming semifinal showdown promises to be an intense battle on the ice. For Alpena, this game is about more than just advancing — it’s about proving their strength, representing their town, and potentially writing a new chapter in Wildcats hockey history.

The puck drops in Plymouth Friday at 11 a.m., and all eyes will be on the Wildcats as they fight to keep their season alive.

The winning team will advance to the championship on Saturday at 3 p.m.
