ALPENA — With the start of a new season, the Alpena High School girls varsity tennis team is stepping onto the courts with one clear goal in mind — growth. Under the leadership of head coach Charlie Giordano, the program continues to prioritize not just improvement in athletic performance but the development of character and teamwork.
“Our goals this year are the same as previous years — growth,” Giordano said. “Growth as tennis players and growth as productive, respectful individuals.”
That emphasis on development is especially important this season as the team welcomes 10 new players, many of whom are picking up a racket for the first time. Practices have focused heavily on technique and form, with Giordano working closely with players to refine fundamentals like scoring, doubles strategy, and proper service motion.
Despite early-season challenges, including limited outdoor practice time due to weather, Giordano remains optimistic. The team has been able to take advantage of indoor facilities at the APlex, providing valuable practice time in preparation for matches.
“The lack of experience is a challenge in a way,” Giordano said, “but nothing that will get in the way of a successful season.”
For Giordano, success isn’t defined by wins and losses. Instead, it’s about personal progress and team enjoyment.
“Having the players recognize their growth and improvement as tennis players, even if they’re not winning, would be a huge success for me,” he said. “I’ve never, and will never, focus on wins as a measure of success. If they enjoy their time on the team and want to continue playing the game in the future, that’s also a measure of success.”
With a coach who emphasizes long-term growth and a supportive team environment, the Wildcats are poised to make meaningful strides this season.
