ALPENA — Alpena Community College (ACC) has added a determined and motivated runner to its cross country team, as Evan Huyck of Sault Ste. Marie officially signed to continue his athletic and academic journey with the Lumberjacks. With a passion for both his sport and his future career path, Huyck’s decision marks a new chapter in his life.

For Huyck, the decision to compete at the collegiate level was rooted in his personal growth and determination.

“During my junior year of high school, I didn’t do that good,” he said. “But then I decided to put in the work over the summer, and I started seeing my potential. That’s when I knew I wanted to keep going.”

While the athletic opportunity was important, it was Alpena’s academic offering that truly sealed the deal for Huyck.

“I was really drawn to their concrete tech program,” he said. “My dad is a concrete tech, and I want to follow in his footsteps.”

Tim Allen, ACC’s cross country coach, is excited to welcome Huyck to the team. Allen, who is also an alumnus of ACC’s running program, brings a personal connection and a mentoring mindset to the role.

“I look for good students overall,” he said when asked about recruitment. “Academics are always important, but one of my key coaching philosophies is work ethic and integrity. They don’t have to be the most talented, but if they’re willing to work hard, that’s what really matters.”

Allen emphasized the importance of supporting student-athletes through the high school-to-college transition.

“It’s a big change, especially for students who aren’t from the area,” he said. “We focus on being patient and providing mentorship to help them adjust to the college experience.”

As an ACC alumnus himself, coaching the Lumberjacks holds a special place in Allen’s heart.

“I’m from here — I ran for ACC myself,” he shared. “It’s special to now be in the position to help shape the next generation of runners.”

With a strong work ethic, clear goals, and a supportive coaching staff behind him, Huyck is ready to make his mark at Alpena Community College — both on the course and in the classroom.
