Fatal house fire on Huron Beach Road remains under investigation

On Wednesday at 2:16 a.m., the Alpena Township Fire Department was dispatched for an unknown fire on Huron Beach Road, according to a Thursday news release from the fire department. Personnel arrived to find a fully involved house fire, with complete collapse of the building. With these conditions, it was estimated that the fire had been burning for several hours prior to notification. Alpena Township fire crews worked to control the spread of the flames due to the extreme winds. The fire was completely extinguished with support from Maple Ridge Fire Department, Presque Isle Fire Department, Alpena CRTC, and Alpena City Fire for stand-by. It was believed that the homeowner was at home at the time of the fire. Michigan State Police Fire Investigators were called to assist and were able to find the remains of a victim. The identity of the victim is being withheld pending notification of the next of kin, and the cause of the fire is undetermined at this time due to the severity of the destruction of the building.
