ALPENA — As the Alpena High School track and field teams step into a new season, head coach Spencer Kraft is focused on more than just podium finishes. With a philosophy rooted in personal growth and long-term success, Kraft is looking to help each athlete reach their own goals, whether that means having fun with friends or competing at the state level.
“The goals are the same as always for me,” Kraft said. “To support each individual athlete in their goals. Whether that is to have fun and make memories or to pursue the sport at a higher level.”
With a team-oriented mindset, Kraft and his coaching staff are also determined to strengthen the Wildcats’ competitive edge in the conference and continue developing athletes capable of succeeding on the state stage.
Early-season training is focused on building a solid foundation. Athletes are working hard to develop resilience and hone the specific skills required for their events. Kraft emphasizes the importance of mastering technique through consistent drills and individual attention.
However, the Wildcats haven’t had the easiest start. Poor weather and unexpected interruptions have taken a toll on practice time.
“Some challenging things we already are facing this year are the poor weather and the inability to practice for most of the season,” Kraft said. “We’re working as a team and as coaches to give the athletes the best chance they can get to catch up and improve.”
Despite setbacks, Kraft remains optimistic. His vision for the season extends far beyond wins and losses.
“I hope to see the athletes grow into the competitors and the people they want to be,” he said. “To pursue any goals or dreams they have beyond and after track and field and to obtain the lessons and discipline that they will need later in life.”
With their eyes set on progress — both on and off the track — the Alpena Wildcats are racing into the season ready to overcome obstacles, embrace challenges, and chase greatness.
