Geraldine Francis LaHaie, a beacon of creativity and love, passed away peacefully on Nov. 12, 2024, at the age of 86, in her hometown of Alpena, where she had been a lifelong resident and an inspiration to many. Born on Jan. 7, 1938, to the late Raymond and Dorothy (Wilson) De Kett, Gerry was a cherished figure in the community, known for her vivacious spirit and generous heart.

Gerry’s life was one marked by pioneering achievements and a passion for the arts. In 1957, she married the love of her life, Marvin LaHaie, who preceded her in death in 2006. Together, they raised a family of three sons, Joel (Myrna) LaHaie, Robert LaHaie, and James (Jennifer) LaHaie, who remember her as a guiding light in their lives. Gerry’s legacy further lives on through her grandchildren, Michael and Jeremy Vigil; her great-granddaughter, Jori Vigil; and her great-great-granddaughter, Mia Vigil. She was a beloved aunt to Laura and Bill Maddox and a sister to the late Barbara Maddox.

In her earlier years, Gerry was a trailblazer, becoming the first female lifeguard in Alpena. Her grace and athleticism also shone through as a swimsuit model and as a figure skating instructor, where she taught countless young people the art of balance and beauty on the ice. Gerry’s love for sports and her significant contributions to the community included her longtime patronage and board member of the Alpena Sports Hall of Fame.

Beyond her public accomplishments, Gerry was an accomplished seamstress and jewelry maker. Her creativity knew no bounds, and she channeled her artistic talents into creating beautiful pieces that were as unique and vibrant as her personality. Her home was a testament to her skills, with flourishing gardens that showcased her green thumb and a workshop where she brought her creative visions to life.

Those who knew Geraldine will remember her as a loving and creative soul, always ready to lend a hand or share a word of encouragement. She had the rare ability to see beauty in the everyday and to turn the mundane into something magical. Her warm presence and infectious laughter will be dearly missed by all who were fortunate enough to cross paths with her.

In accordance with her wishes, Gerry has been taken for cremation with a private memorial service to be held at a later date. McWilliams Funeral Home has assisted the family.
