MARGARET ELLEN KIRBY

MARGARET ELLEN KIRBY

July 15, 1923 – Nov. 19, 2024

Margaret Ellen Kirby, of Alpena, was 101 years old when she passed away peacefully on Nov. 19, 2024.

Margaret Ellen Welk was born on July 15, 1923, to William and Alma Welk. She was raised in Alpena and as a child was drawn to fashion and clothing – an interest that continued her entire life. Margaret graduated from Alpena High School, and over the years worked at the Alpena Furniture Store, Grace Howe Shop, and Abitibi.

In December of 1946, Margaret married Charles Kimball, and the couple raised three children in Alpena – Jim, Bill, and Kathy.

Throughout her life, Margaret was a very active member of the community. She attended St. Paul’s Church, was a charter member of the Alpena Country Club, as well as being a member of the Lake Winyah Club.

Over the years, Margaret spent her summers with a wonderful group of long-time friends and family at her Long Lake cottage. It was here that she was known as one of the first folks to enter the water after a cold winter – even beating the young kids out for a chilly swim. Margaret also enjoyed playing golf for most of her adult life.

Margaret discovered love a second time upon meeting Edward Kirby and the couple were married in June of 1989. With Ed, Margaret found an adventurous companion and they explored the region in their motor home and boat – with their dog Bandit, a faithful partner along the way.

As she aged closer and closer to the century mark, Margaret remained very active and astute – continuing to be a warm, thoughtful friend and a dedicated parent. She will be dearly missed by all who knew her.

Margaret is survived by her sons Jim and Bill Kimball, grandson Charlie Kimball, and great-grandchildren Wyatt and Miller Rose Kimball.

Cremation arrangements have been made through McWilliams Funeral Home. A celebration of Margaret’s life will take place in the summer of 2025 – looking over the water at her beloved Long Lake. Memorial donations can be made to St. Paul Lutheran Church – Alpena, or Hospice of Michigan.
