MARIETTE F. POTVIN

MARIETTE F. POTVIN

March 5, 1925 – Nov. 23, 2024

Mariette F. Potvin, 99, passed away peacefully, Nov. 23, 2024, at Boardman Lake Glens in Traverse City.

Mariette Fletcher Potvin was born in Alpena on March 5, 1925, to Katherine (Gilchrist) Fletcher and Philip K. Fletcher. She graduated from Dana Hall School in Wellesley, Massachusetts, and attended the University of Michigan.

On Nov. 10, 1945, she was united in marriage to James E. Potvin, also of Alpena. They made their permanent home in Cadillac in 1946. Mariette was a member and Eucharistic minister of St. Ann Catholic Church. She was also a member of Daughters of the American Revolution, Philharmonic Club, and Mercy Hospital Auxiliary.

Family, Faith, Community comprised Mariette’s life. Love of history drew her to Genealogy. Researching her family tree was fascinating and rewarding for her. A true passion! As was helping others. Her gifts of listening and attending were exemplified in Hospice work. For 18 years, Mariette was moved and enriched by her Hospice experiences with families, as well as with her co-workers. With compassion and grace, she offered a true example of a faithful servant. Mariette was also inspired by the Eagle Village Community near Hersey. Her visits allowed her to hear stories of Hope and Love in the transforming lives of young people and of their families. She strongly respected and supported the mission of Eagle Village.

Mariette’s generous heart was always open! She was a loving mother and a loving caregiver for her husband, Jim, a faithful servant, a loyal friend. Her children and their families would all agree that Mom, Grammie, G.G. loved the “individual” person. She never compared anyone, but always listened, encouraged, and supported each one of us…” I’m so very proud of YOU.”

Mariette welcomed each day with gratitude and wonder. Her example of Living embraces us with Hope and Love always.

Mariette was preceded in death by her husband, Jim, and her sister, Grace Fletcher Gordon. She is survived by her four children, Philip N. (Janet) Potvin, Katherine P. (Bruce) Shurtz, Joan P. (James) Delamater, Mariette P. (Gary) Borucki, 11 grandchildren, and 19 great-grandchildren. Her brother-in-law, Dr. Clayton H. Gordon, and many loving nieces and nephews and their families.
