Darlene June (Nevins, Shorkey) Yarch, 96, of Alpena, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Dec. 24, 2024, surrounded by her loving family. Darlene June Benac was born on June 2, 1928, in Hillman, to Fred and Fern (Connon) Benac, Darlene lived a full and beautiful life, leaving a legacy of love, resilience, and family.

Darlene was married to three devoted husbands throughout her life: the late, Glen Nevins, Allen Shorkey, and Eugene Yarch. She was a proud and loving mother to her children: Cathy Nevins of Virginia, Maryette (Steve) Cripps of Alpena, Brenda (Mike) Morey of Traverse City, Kelli Bandstra of Grand Rapids, and daughter-in-law Cindy Nevins of Newburgh, Indiana. She was preceded in death by her beloved son, Howard Nevins and her cherished grandson, Christopher McNaughton.

Darlene adored her 15 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren, taking great pride in their accomplishments and milestones. She worked tirelessly throughout her life, often holding multiple jobs to provide for her family. Her strength and determination were unmatched, and she remained resilient through life’s challenges, including living through many world-changing events.

While Darlene was hardworking and kind, she was also known for her sassy sense of humor, reminiscent of the Hallmark cartoon character Maxine. She never hesitated to share her sharp wit or an honest opinion, and her playful sass brought laughter to all who knew her.

Darlene had a natural green thumb and loved tending to her flowers, creating beauty wherever she went. Her Sunday mornings were often spent enjoying “Sunday Mornings in Poland,” on the radio. She also had a soft spot for old Western movies and an interest in true crime TV shows, which she enjoyed in her quiet moments.

Darlene is also preceded in death by her siblings: Harold (Velma) Benac, Wes (Wilma) Benac, Ervin (Mildred) Benac, Walt (Irene) Benac, Willis (Phyllis) Benac, and Mariette Benac. Despite the hardships of loss, Darlene maintained her vibrant spirit, often sharing stories of her upbringing in Long Rapids and the love she poured into her family.

She will be remembered for her kindness, her hardworking nature, her sharp sense of humor, and the joy she brought to all who knew her. Darlene’s life was a testament to the power of love, perseverance, and resilience, and her memory will continue to inspire and bring smiles to those who knew her.

Visitation will take place at the Bannan Funeral Home on Saturday, Dec. 28, 2024, from 1 p.m. until the time of the service to honor Darlene’s life at 3 p.m. with the Rev. Janice Miller officiating. The family invites all who knew Darlene to join them in celebrating her remarkable life.

Interment: Long Rapids Cemetery
