GERALD LEE PERKINS

July 28, 1942 – Dec. 1, 2024

Gerald Lee Perkins, a cherished family man, respected veteran, and passionate outdoorsman, passed away peacefully on Dec. 1, 2024, at the age of 82, in his hometown of Alpena, where he was also born on July 28, 1942. Gerald, known for his loving and wise nature, left behind a legacy of dedication, service, and kindness that will be fondly remembered by all who knew him.

The son of the late Edwin and Eleanor (Lee) Perkins, Gerald grew up in Alpena with a close-knit family, including his sister Patricia (Stephen) Gore of Emit, North Carolina. He was preceded in death by his son Steven Perkins, brothers Robert and Thomas Perkins, and is survived by his sister-in-law, Jacki Perkins of Alpena. Gerald’s life was enriched by his marriage to his beloved wife of 64 years, Gracie, who was his partner in every sense and his greatest support.

Together, Gerald and Gracie raised a loving family, instilling in their children the values of integrity and compassion. Gerald was a proud father to Gerald (Amber) Perkins, Jr. of Soddy Daisy, Tennessee, Brian (Kathy) Perkins of Herron, Kenneth (Sigrid) Perkins of Winters, California, and Susan (Jon) Benson of Alpena. His role as a grandfather brought him immense joy, and he leaves behind cherished memories for his grandchildren: Tyler, Joshua, Abigail, Shane, Kayla, Dustin, Cheyenne, Brandon, Kathryn, Karolina, and Kaelyn.

Gerald honorably served his country as a proud United States Marine and was a Vietnam veteran. His commitment to excellence continued into his civilian life, where he retired from a successful career in Quality Assurance at Besser Company. Gerald’s work ethic and dedication to his role were evident to all who worked alongside him.

Beyond his professional life, Gerald was the proud owner of Thunder Bay Labs, where his passion for breeding, raising, and training Black Labs was more than just a hobby–it was a way of life. As an avid hunter and outdoorsman, he found solace and joy in the beauty of nature. His love for the outdoors was a trait he shared generously with his family and friends, creating lasting memories on hunting trips and outdoor adventures.

Gerald’s wisdom and loving nature were the cornerstones of his existence. He approached life with a gentle strength that earned him the respect and admiration of those around him. His guidance and support were invaluable, and his presence was a source of comfort and stability.

A private family service has taken place. Gerald was laid to rest at Grace Lutheran Cemetery.
