RICHARD CHARLES HAMPSHER
July 18, 1948 – Dec. 18, 2024
Richard Charles Hampsher, known affectionately as Dick to his friends and family, passed away peacefully on Dec. 18, 2024, at the age of 76. Born on July 18, 1948, in Alpena, Dick was a lifelong resident of the town he loved. He was the cherished son of the late Charles and Helen (Sommerfield) Hampsher, a devoted husband, a loving father, and a doting grandfather.
Dick is survived by his beloved wife of over five decades, Loretta (Proctor) Hampsher, whom he married on Jan. 22, 1972. Together, they built a life filled with love, laughter, and enduring memories. He was a proud father to his children, Christopher (Danielle) Hampsher and Nickie Hampsher, and a joyful grandfather to Reagan, Camden, and the late Declan. His sister, Gloria Scurlock, and his loyal canine companion, Jerry the dog, also mourn his loss.
For many years, Dick applied his skilled hands and keen eye to autobody work at D&M Collision. His craftsmanship was not just a job but a passion, as he poured his heart into every vehicle that rolled into the shop. His dedication to his craft extended beyond his professional life, as he found joy in building custom cars and trucks, assembling intricate car models, and amassing an impressive collection of Matchbox cars.
Dick’s commitment to service was evident through his active involvement in the community. He was a past president of the Veterans of the Vietnam War Inc. and a dedicated member of the VFW Post #2496. His service to his country and fellow veterans was a source of great pride and camaraderie.
Perhaps one of Dick’s most cherished roles was that of Santa Claus, which he played for many years. His natural warmth and jolly demeanor brought smiles to countless children and adults alike during the holiday season. It was a role he treasured, embodying the spirit of giving and joy.
A memorial service to be held in the summer of 2025 will be announced in a future edition of The Alpena News. McWilliams Funeral Home is assisting the family.
