ARTHUR L. SAMP

March 2, 1934 – Dec. 27, 2024

Arthur L. Samp, a cherished figure in the hearts of many, left this world peacefully on Dec. 27, 2024, at his home in Alpena. Born on March 2, 1934, he was the beloved son of the late Joseph and Celia (Kaszubowski) Samp. Arthur’s spirit resonated with kindness, warmth, and love, qualities that he generously shared with those fortunate enough to know him.

A proud veteran, Arthur served his country in the United States Navy during the Korean War, embodying the courage and dedication that marked his life. After his military service, he embarked on a career with Besser Company, where he devoted 29 years of his life until his well-deserved retirement in 1996, earning the admiration of colleagues and friends alike.

On a beautiful day in June 1955, Arthur married the love of his life, Gertrude Zielaskowski, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Alpena. Their union was a testament to enduring love, lasting a remarkable 69 years, filled with shared dreams, laughter, and the joys of family. Together, they raised four wonderful children: Bernadine (Mark) Gagnon, Michael (Patricia) Samp, Karen (James) Kelly, and Sharon (Raymond) Hamilton, providing a nurturing environment that flourished with warmth and support.

A man of many passions, Arthur found solace and happiness in the embrace of nature. He was an avid woodworker, crafting beautiful pieces that echoed his skillful hands and creative spirit. His love for the outdoors was evident in his enjoyment of deer hunting, which he continued to pursue even into his late 80s. Fishing and camping brought him joy, as did the quiet moments spent tending to his beloved garden. His pride in his garden was a reflection of his nurturing nature, where each bloom was a testament to his care and dedication.

Arthur’s legacy lives on through his beloved family. He is survived by his devoted wife Gertrude, their three children, 10 grandchildren, and 17 great-grandchildren, who will carry his memory in their hearts. His brother, David Samp, a sister, June Kaszubowski, and several nieces and nephews also remain to honor the man he was.

While Arthur’s departure leaves an irreplaceable void in the lives of his family, he is reunited with his daughter, Karen Kelly, along with two brothers, Melvin Samp and Raymond Samp, and two sisters, Genevieve McCann and Dolores Kowalsky, in eternal peace.

Visitation for Arthur will be held on Jan. 4, 2025, from 10 a.m. until the memorial service at 11 a.m. at A.E. Ross Funeral Home in Alpena, a gathering to celebrate a life well-lived, rich in love, and steeped in the beauty of cherished memories. In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial contribution to Hospice of Michigan. Online condolences may be registered at www.aerossfuneralhome.com
