HONORA IRENE DePOORTER
July 5, 1930 – Jan. 8, 2025
Honora Irene DePoorter, 94, of Presque Isle, formerly of Caseville, passed away on Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2025, surrounded by her loved ones at Besser Senior Living Community in Alpena. She was born on July 5, 1930, in Detroit, to the late William and Honora Catherine (McGlenn) Holtzman. Honora graduated from Southeastern High School and later attended college. She worked as a cashier for Hollywood Market and Chatham Grocery for over 25 years. A proud charter member of the Eagles Ladies Auxiliary, Honora also volunteered with hospice for several years.
On May 6, 1950, Honora married the love of her life, Morris DePoorter, and they shared over 69 joyful years together before his passing on June 5, 2019.
Honora was an accomplished bowler, enjoying many years on the lanes playing in many leagues. She was always ready for a card game, whether it was euchre or poker with family and also friends in Florida. Honora also loved playing horseshoes and shuffleboard, and she never missed an opportunity to find a great deal while shopping. An avid reader and talented cook, she delighted in preparing delicious meals. She was a huge fan of Bob Seger, especially her favorite song, “Old Time Rock ‘n Roll,” and even had the opportunity to meet him while working at Chatham.
Above all, Honora cherished her family, and they were her greatest treasure. Her love, kindness, and care will resonate in the hearts of generations to come. Honora had a remarkable ability to make everyone feel like the most important person in the room. Her feisty spirit, determination, and most of all, her warmth and smile, will be missed deeply by all who knew her.
Honora is survived by her children, Nora (Norm) Foldenauer, Morene (Keith) Rehbine, Morris W. (Gloria) DePoorter, Alice (Mike) Pokowski, and Kathleen (Greg) Augustyn; grandchildren, Janelle (Brett), Jeff, Kerry (Melissa), Melissa (Rich), Heather, Helenea (Greg), Morris E., Brian (fiance, Alyssa), Cameron, Andrew (Hayley), and Amanda (Shane); 14 great-grandchildren; best friend of over 90 years, Barbara Stevenson; many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be noon, Saturday, Jan. 11 at the Champagne Funeral Chapel. Visitation will be from 11:30 a.m. until the time of her service. The Rev. Karen Bouverette will officiate with the burial held privately at Caseville Twp. Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, those planning memorial contributions, are asked to consider donation to Compassus Hospice in Alpena or a Humane Society of your choosing.
The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the staff at Besser Senior Living and the staff of Compassus Hospice for the wonderful and compassionate care they gave Honora.
