JESSE WESLEY DURANCEAU
Aug. 31, 1952 – Dec. 15, 2024
Dr. Jesse Wesley Duranceau passed away on Sunday, Dec. 15, 2024, following a lengthy illness. He left this life surrounded by family at his beloved home “Camp Kzoo” in Kalamazoo. He was born Aug. 31, 1952, in Alpena, to Mary Ellen (Habermehl) and James Duranceau. Preceding him in death were his mother and stepfather, Hubert (Pat) Patterson; his father; and several furry companions.
Four siblings survive Jesse: Denise Rousseau, Donna (Maurice) Tucker, Phillip Duranceau and Karen Duranceau; his longtime companion Jamie Chiles; stepchildren Michael (Amanda) Butterfield, Gabrielle Butterfield, and grandson Jude Wesley Butterfield; along with several nieces and nephews.
Jesse graduated from Alpena High in 1970 and obtained a degree in philosophy from Grand Valley State University. He then moved to New York City where he joined Erik Hawkins Dance Company (1976-1984) as a professional modern theatrical dancer. He returned to Michigan to attend MSU School of Osteopathic Medicine and obtained a degree in internal medicine. He moved to Kalamazoo and practiced at Borgess Health for over 20 years, focusing on patients with complex medical conditions.
Outside of work, Jesse was an expert woodworker who designed and made all the unique interior doors and cabinets in his home along with many pieces of furniture. He was also an avid gardener and built several benches that were located throughout his garden area. In addition, he was a music aficionado of multiple genres and an art collector. His home was a welcoming place for family and friends to enjoy conversation and laughs, tour the gardens, or just relax by the pool and swim.
At his request, there was no formal service, and cremation was handled by Langeland Family Funeral Home.
