WILLIAM MYLES FOSTER
July 19, 1938 – Jan. 14, 2025
William Myles Foster, 86, of East China Township, passed away on Jan. 14, 2025 after a lengthy illness.
Bill was born on July 19, 1938 in Alpena, Michigan to Myles and Gayle Foster. After graduation from Alpena High School in 1956, he joined the Army National Guard at Camp Grayling. He went on to study education and education administration at Eastern Michigan University, where he earned both bachelor’s and master’s degrees.
He began his career as a teacher at Gilbert Junior High School in Algonac in 1961. He held many positions over the years. In addition to teaching, he was a counselor, middle school principal, assistant superintendent and superintendent in a career that spanned 50 years within the Algonac district.
In 1953, Bill was invited to a Sadie Hawkins Day dance by Dorothy Vredenburg of Ossineke, Michigan. This later proved to be a good choice on her part as they began dating after graduation in 1956, eventually marrying in 1959. They have two sons, Bill of Ann Arbor, Michigan and John of Wyoming, Michigan.
In 2009, Bill retired from the school district. The library at Algonquin Middle School was subsequently dedicated to him for his years of service as principal. He remained active in public service after retirement, serving on the St. Clair County Parks and Recreation Commission and the St. Clair County Library board. He was a lifetime member of the Algonac Lions Club and worked tirelessly in their support of Leader Dogs for the Blind. He was an avid golfer and also enjoyed fishing and waterfowl hunting. He loved piloting his prized 1952 Chris Craft, the Dorothy L, around the St. Clair River and Lake St. Clair.
Bill is survived by Dorothy, his wife of nearly 66 years, his sister Leslie Asadorian (Leon), his brother Robert (Rose), his sons Bill (Barb) and John (Ann) and their two children Johnny and Elizabeth.
Services will be held at Rose Hill Cemetery in East China at a date to be determined this spring. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made to the following organizations:
