Eleanor Julia Stema, a beacon of love and faith, passed away peacefully on Feb. 25, 2025, at the age of 86 in Alpena, surrounded by the warmth of her family’s love. Born on June 7, 1938, in Detroit.
Eleanor’s was a dedicated telephone operator for GTE. Her commitment to her work was paralleled only by her involvement in various associations, including the All-Saints Rosary Society and the GTE Club, where she formed lasting friendships and served her community with grace.
The heart of Eleanor’s world was her family. She is survived by husband Gerald. She was a loving mother to Diane Smith, Christine (Christopher) Zelenock, Tim (Cecelia) Stema, Matthew (Trudy) Stema, and Mark Stema. Her brothers, Gerald (Barbra) Koss, Dennis Koss, Arthur (Joyce) Koss, and Erwin (Monica) Koss, along with sister-in-law Kathy Kieliszewski, held a special place in her life. Elanor’s legacy continues through her cherished 10 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, who will carry forward her spirit of kindness and generosity.
Eleanor was preceded in death by her parents, Anthony and Clara Koss, and her brother, Robert Koss. They paved the way for her strong faith-filled journey through life, a path she walked with unwavering conviction and joy.
Those who knew Eleanor will remember her for her love of dancing to Polka music with her husband. She found solace in the pages of a good book, excitement in the adventures of travel, and satisfaction in the art of sewing. Eleanor’s garden was a vibrant tapestry of flowers, a reflection of her love for nature.
A master in the kitchen, Eleanor’s cooking and baking were acts of love, and she delighted in sharing her recipes with all who knew her. Her children and grandchildren will carry the warmth of her culinary legacy in their hearts and homes.
Photography was more than a hobby for Eleanor; it was a way to capture the fleeting moments that together weave the rich tapestry of a well-lived life. Her albums are treasured chronicles of a life filled with joy, a life that touched so many others in profound ways.
A memorial service will be held at McWilliams Funeral Home on Friday, Feb. 28, 2025, family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until the time of service at 2:30 p.m. with Deacon Michael Roy Officiating.
