JENNIE JANE GILMAN

JENNIE JANE GILMAN
Nov. 12, 1943 – Feb. 20, 2025
Jennie Jane Gilman, a cherished mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on Feb. 20, 2025, in Alpena, at the age of 81. Born Nov. 12, 1943, in Detroit, Jennie was the daughter of the late Russell and Ella (Boehning) Benson. Her life was a testament to her unwavering spirit and the love she shared with those around her.
Though born in Detroit, Jennie grew up in Atlanta, Michigan, where the closeness of the small community added to the warmth and closeness of her family. She carried the values of hard work and dedication throughout her life, which were evident in her long-standing career in clerical work. Colleagues knew Jennie as the backbone of the office, always reliable and organized, ensuring everything ran smoothly.
Her personal life was marked by the same level of commitment she showed professionally. Jennie was a devoted mother to her son, Greg (Tonya) Gilman, and a doting grandmother to Hazel Blakely, who brought immense joy and laughter into her life.
Jennie’s passion for quilting was more than just a hobby; it was a way for her to connect with others and share her creativity. As a member of three different quilting guilds, she formed countless friendships and contributed to the warmth of the community. Her quilts were not just beautiful pieces of art but also symbols of the care she put into every stitch.
Travel, puzzles, and playing cards were among Jennie’s other interests. She had an adventurous spirit and loved exploring new places, whether through a book or on a trip with friends and family. Her knack for solving puzzles was just another facet of her sharp mind, and her love for card games was an extension of her sociable and outgoing nature.
Jennie was known for her generosity and her inclination to put others first. She was an excellent dog sitter, often taking care of her friends’ furry companions with as much love and attention as she gave to her own family. Her presence was a source of comfort and joy to all who knew her.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Roy, her siblings Patricia, Janice, Jimmy, and Russell Benson, and her sister Judith Currie. Jennie is survived by her son, Greg (Tonya) Gilman; her sister-in-law, Denise Benson; her nephew, Scott Currie; her niece, Lisa Blaine; and her cherished granddaughter, Hazel Blakely.
Jennie’s life was a beautiful patchwork of love, friendship, and service, much like the quilts she crafted with such care.
Jennie has been taken for cremation with no services planned at this time. McWilliams Funeral Home has assisted the family.
