VICTOR ALEXANDER BAYS
July 8, 1939 – Feb. 7, 2025
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Victor Bays on Feb. 7, 2025, in his 85 year. Beloved son, father, uncle, grandfather, and great-grandfather and friend, Vic will always have a special place in our memories and hearts.
Vic was born in Detroit, the eldest son of Alexander and Rita Bays. Like so many young boys living in the Motor City, he developed a passion for cars, acquiring his first motorized vehicle – a scooter at age 15. With a curious “can do” attitude he soon became adept at tinkering with, repairing, and completely remodeling cars. This love for the automobile and mechanical ingenuity stayed with him for life. At age 17, Vic moved with his family to Ossineke in Northern Michigan and shortly thereafter he joined the US Navy to serve the country he loved. By the age of 20, Vic was married and holding the first of seven children he would raise.
Vic was a principled, goal-driven man, his actions guided by strong values. He embodied “hard work,” whether putting in long hours to support his family or transforming an old house into a home he loved. He left a lasting impression on everyone he met, always making new friends. His social nature helped him throughout his long career as a local delivery man and later manager at Sears. Genuine and authentic, he connected with others easily.
In his later years, he could be found most summer weekends hanging out at car shows with his automobile loving friends. In these years he grew closer and closer to his children, and he kept giving, with regular donations to various charities to improve the health of pets, people, place and planet.
Victor was predeceased by his parents Rita Marie Bays (nee Saladin) and Alexander Bays; and by his three brothers David, Lynn, and Patrick, as well as by his sister, Shirley Lundquist. Victor is survived by three daughters and five sons and many grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, please consider sending a donation to one of Victor’s treasured causes – the Alpena Humane Society. Cremation arrangements are being handled by Bannan Funeral Home.
