JOHN KLEIBER

John Frederick “Sonny” Kleiber, age 92, of Hawks, passed away at home on Sunday, Feb. 23, 2025.

He was born in Flint to John and Elsa (Arlt) Kleiber on Aug. 2, 1932.

John graduated from St. Mary High School in Flint in 1950. He served in the United States Army during the Korean War. On Nov. 22, 1958, he married Rita Matuszewski at St. Dominic Catholic Church. John retired from Kleiber Builders in 2010. He served as the Bismarck Township Supervisor for more than 50 years. He was on the Rogers City Fire and Ambulance Boards, was a life member of Rogers City VFW Post 607 and the 3rd degree Knights of Columbus and was an active member of St. Dominic Catholic Church. In his spare time, John enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time with his family.

He is survived by his wife, Rita; two children, Mike (Sue) Kleiber of Hawks and Sue (Ron Valley) Berg of Herron; a son-in-law, Stosh Szczerowski of Hawks; six grandchildren, Jesse (Julie) Kleiber, Allan (Jodi) Berg, Alicia (Rob) Frantz, Vinny (Emily) Szczerowski, Elizabeth Kleiber and Veronica (Jake) Hein; nine great-grandchildren, Lexi Berg, Abbi Berg, Emerson Kleiber, Ellery Kleiber, Evelyn Kleiber, Danielle (James) Leedy, Taylor (Michael) Vandermaas, Isaac Rhode and Caleb Rhode; and two sisters, Yvonne Rondeau and Norma Kleiber.

John was preceded in death by a daughter, Ann Szczerowski; and three sisters, Lois Mauti, Mildred Molski and Vernetta Selke.

Friends may visit at the Beck Funeral Home on Thursday, March 6 from 4 to 8 p.m. where Rogers City VFW Post 607 will accord military honors at 6:45 followed by the parish wake at 7 p.m. with St. Mary Michelz conducting. Visitation will resume on Friday, March 7 at St. Dominic Catholic Church from 10 a.m. until time of his memorial Mass at 11 a.m. with Fr. Charlie Donajkowski officiating.

Inurnment will take place in the spring at St. Dominic Catholic Cemetery.

In lieu of owers, memorials may be given to St. Dominic Catholic Church in memory of John Kleiber.
