LAWRENCE LEE NELSON
Sept. 21, 1942 – March 31, 2025
Lawrence Lee Nelson, known affectionately as Larry to his friends and family, passed away unexpectedly March 31, 2025. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend whose warmth and generosity touched the lives of many.
Larry was born Sept. 21, 1942 to the late Ingvar and Genevieve (Mahoney) Nelson. He was a lifelong resident of Alpena, a place he cherished and contributed to throughout his life. He was the loving husband of Emma (Domke) Nelson, with whom he shared a beautiful marriage of over 55 years, having married on September 20, 1969. Together, they raised two wonderful children, Brian Nelson and Shelley (Daniel) Morrison, who in turn blessed Larry with the joy of grandchildren: Alexis Morrison (Drake Moore) and Daniel Morrison III.
Larry was preceded in death by his brother Denny Nelson and is survived by his siblings, Peggy Reilly and Nick Nelson, along with several nieces and nephews who will remember him fondly for his kindness and spirited nature.
Larry was proud to have served his country having served in the Army for several years. Larry’s work ethic was as strong as his love for his family. He began his career at National Gypsum and later became self-employed, showcasing his entrepreneurial spirit. Eventually, he found his calling in maintenance for Alpena County, where he dedicated many years of service before retiring. His colleagues knew him as a hardworking and reliable individual who always lent a helping hand.
An avid outdoorsman, Larry found solace and joy in nature. He loved hunting, snowmobiling, boating, and could often be found cutting wood. He also enjoyed swimming–often at his good friend Florian’s place. His happiest moments were spent with friends and family at the cabin on Misery Bay, where he created countless cherished memories with his loved ones. Larry’s ability to make new friends wherever he went was a testament to his friendly demeanor and open heart. He was a long-time member of Grace Lutheran Church, and the Fraternal Order of Eagles in Alpena.
Those who knew Larry will remember him as a man who lived life to the fullest, with a smile on his face and a willingness to help others. His legacy is one of love, friendship, and a deep connection to his roots in Alpena. Larry’s presence will be profoundly missed, but the memories he created will continue to inspire and comfort his family and friends.
