Madeline Mary Lucas, 102, of Alpena, passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, April 24, 2025, and is now in the arms of the Lord that she was deeply dedicated through her Catholic Faith.
She was born in Alpena on Feb. 17, 1923, to the late Peter and Exilda (Robinette) LaMarre and was raised at 408 Ninth Street in Alpena, along with nine siblings, until the marriage to Donald Lucas on May 7, 1946, at St. Anne’s Church.
During her single life she worked at JCPenney’s and volunteered as a candy striper at Alpena General Hospital. During her marriage, and raising a family, she was employed at Kentucky Motor Lodge before her employment with Nerkowski Catering. During the 1980’s she, along with her eldest daughter, owned and operated the Lucas Catering Business. She closed and retired the business at the age of 88.
Madeline was a loving mother of nine children in which she placed her children’s interest and needs above herself. With strong Christian faith, family loyalty and work ethics, she was an inspiration to the current generation and those that followed. She and her husband Don, while raising their family, had many friends that included the Nowaks, the Kiersts, the Donajkowski’s, the Roznowski’s, the Frary’s and the Church’s that consisted of many family outings and summer enjoyment, along with weekly square dancing. Madeline also found time to volunteer at St. Anne’s Sodality and St. Vincent DePaul.
Madeline is survived by all of her nine children: Mariette (Dan) Jore and life friend, Dennis Hiske, Diane (Michael) Kelley, Ruth (William) McEwen, Theodore (Sandy) Lucas, Thomas (Cindy) Lucas, Margaret (Robert) LaBarge, Jeanette (John) Shupert, Robert (Beth) Lucas and her favorite child, Thea Lucas; 42 grandchildren; 56 great-grandchildren and 15 great-great-grandchildren.
Madeline was preceded in death by her husband of 46 years of marriage, Donald Lucas, a son-in-law, Danny Jore, and a great-great-grandchild, Kennedy Niles. She was also the lone survivor of her siblings and spouses; Albert (Dorothy) LaMarre, Henry LaMarre, Reverend Theodore LaMarre, Armond (Dorothy ) LaMarre, Virgil (Gladys) LaMarre, Richard (Kathleen) LaMarre, Rena LaMarre; Sisters Thea LaMarre and Imogene (Gerald) Manion. Along with in-Laws, George (Earlda) Lucas and Paul (Joyce) Lucas.
Visitation will take place Tuesday at Bannan Funeral Home from 4 to 8 p.m. with a Parish Prayer Service at 7 p.m. and continue Wednesday at St. Anne Church of All Saints Parish from 10 a.m. until the Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Emmanuel Finbarr officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to All Saints School and Hospice of Michigan.
