County made right call with jail sale
The Alpena County Board of Commissioners made the right call on the sale of its old county jail property on Johnson Street.
As News staff writer Steve Schulwitz reported recently, the board accepted a $229,029 bid from the firm Alpena Marc, which intends to construct small drive-thru locations of Quiznos, Biggby Coffee, and Taco Del Mar restaurants.
Alpena Marc outbid MyMichigan Health’s $210,000 offer for the property, where the hospital system aimed to relocate and expand its orthopedic and rehabilitation services into a new building.
Alpena Marc owner Jeff Konczak said work will begin at the property once the sale is finalized, and the new businesses opened around Memorial Day next year.
Konczak expects to invest $1.75 million, and estimates 40 to 55 new jobs would be created.
The county needed to get the old jail — and its maintenance costs — off its books.
With its recent decision, the county did so in a way that made the county a decent amount of revenue, will put new businesses on the tax rolls, and will spur the local economy with the creation of new jobs and commerce.
Plus, we love tacos.
All around, the board’s recent decision was a smart one, and we’re glad the county board did it.
